Old Blue Triptych
Description
“Old Blue” is an older piece I particularly like. I had recently returned to the US from a trip to Tokyo in college. I went for a long meandering drive on a crisp dry winter day. The roads were all clear and made for easy going. I summited a few local hills to capture reference photos for future landscape paintings. About two hours into the photo shoot I drove past this spry old pickup. I was drawn to how the blue tones of the shadowed snow found their way into the pickup’s bodywork. I was captured by its continuity.
After revisiting the photos in the studio, I couldn’t help but be drawn back to this old work truck. Few of the landscape photos settled well so I decided to make a triptych out of Old Blue. I blurred the lines between subject, landscape, and abstract paintings, bending the norms of painting in a subtle way which I hope displays a certain conviction. The middle piece rests well on its own, but in between two hill sections this work has more to say than just what Old Blue is. I think it personifies, and may even ask the question who he is.
This piece was eventually Jurried into and displayed at a fine arts gallery showing at the Univieristy of Idaho. Now accepting offers.
